These are a multi-use short. One of the uses is swimming, but because it's not solely a swimsuit, there isn't any "built-in underwear" inside. That said, the fabric is perfect for swimming and feels like a very lightweight swim trunk.
These were designed for bodies that traditionally have hips but I think would fit pretty well on anyone. Just note this when deciding on sizing.
When I was a size 12/14, a size 2X was a nice, roomie fit on me. But I do I think an XL would also fit someone who is approximately that size/shape and would be a better option if you're looking to use these as swim shorts.
